As the years rolled by, I’ve realized how my inner-critic, my need to be perfect, my fear of criticism, and my want for everyone to approve of my work just paralyzed me. I would write basic web copy for my practice but I ignored the pull of sharing my soul. Writing that last sentence still tugs at a deep place within, and I realize old anxiety is still somewhat present.
I wanted to move my career to the next level and spent many hours soul-searching, dreaming about my ideal career. The fantasy of sitting behind a writing desk in a home office, with a view of a winter ocean, has been with me since I was a child and I’ve found it still present. “Why not become a writer?” I asked myself. “You can’t write!” was the first answer followed by “Who wants to read your work?” Wow…I had a lot of work to do. “What happened to the years of work on myself to overcome these issues?”
I’m often amazed at the journey of healing and how deeply rooted our wounds are in every facet of our being. So I wrote on a piece of paper all the reasons why I couldn’t or shouldn’t write. I saw some very familiar, and old, thought patterns and ways of being, and I decided to rip them up and throw them away. “I’m not going back to those places!!!”
I needed to resource myself. I started searching for a coach or writers group to help me. That same morning I started searching, an advertisement from Bill O’Hanlon came through my email. It was actually at the same exact moment that I was on Google, his announcement arrived. As I have learned in the past…when the universe speaks to me…I listen!
I sat on my first conference call with Bill, quietly observing and taking in the struggles of others, and heard information that was not new to me, but was received in a new way that instantly shifted me.
The advice that follows is some of his and some of mine. A perfect collaboration!
binary options Just get it out there – get your work out to the word because people will benefit from what you have to offer. Don’t spend time creating the perfect masterpiece and being someone you are not. There are writers who speak and write beautifully, poetically and amazingly…I’m not one of them. Get your voice out there in your authentic style, and be heard by the world. If there are people who don’t like my style, or who don’t have use for what I have to say, then they don’t have to read what I write.
If you have to tailor your writing to a specific audience, and it requires a painstaking experience, I wish you the best. For everyone else who simply wants to share what is inside, your audience will come based on who you are. Your readers want to feel you. If they can feel a passion for who you are, and connect with your words and you work, and find value in it, they become your audience. The world is vast and it can be a painstaking experience to fit yourself into places you are not. Be real, be authentic, be yourself, have confidence in your true nature and value yourself and your readers will feel who you are and follow you.
Sit down at your computer and just start to write, as if you were having a conversation with someone. Let go of wondering what will happen when you are done. What will people say? You want your audience to find value in YOU and it is ok if readers are looking for something else, a better fit for them. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t good enough, or that you will be rejected. It just means that they may be a better fit for someone else. It is similar to dating. You don’t want to partner with just anyone because you can lead a miserable life…you want to find someone who is a good fit for you so you can be real, authentic to yourself, and enjoy your experiences.
If you sit down and nothing comes out, try something else. Get an audio recorder and carry it with you always. When your creative energy flows, say the words out loud as if you were having a conversation. You can transcribe them later, or use a program that does it for you. The most important piece is to just let it flow out. Let your voice be heard.
So just go do it!! Just sit down and start writing to yourself and see what comes out.
